While we are known throughout New Jersey primarily as the leading provider of visiting dental services to patients in their homes and over 350 assisted-living facilities, our work providing care to Alzheimer’s patients is equally as close to our hearts.
A History of Providing Visiting Dental Care
Dental Home Services was built around the simple but powerful idea that dental care should meet patients where they are—especially when leaving home is no longer an option. Dr. Stu Rubin and his daughter, Dr. Lindsay Rubin, lead a team of twelve dentists who are dedicated to providing care to homebound individuals. From exams and cleanings to X-rays, extractions, fillings, and dentures, their practice delivers the full scope of care many patients would otherwise struggle to access.
Dental Care for Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease
Many of the patients Drs. Rubin and their team visit are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that touches patients and their families in a unique manner. One of the most difficult challenges providing dental care in these situations is that Alzheimer’s patients often have a much harder time articulating their dental needs, such as where a denture hurts, or where the gum tissue might be sore. In these instances it’s important to have a dental provider who has experience working with patients with Alzheimer’s, and understands their specific emotional needs and difficulty expressing themselves.
A Personal Touch
We have decades of experience delivering dental care to patients with Alzheimer’s disease across New Jersey, and our work goes far beyond clinical treatment. Providing dental care for these patients in their homes offers us a unique window into their lives and daily challenges, and allows us to forge deeply personal connections that could not be created in a traditional dental office setting.
This intimacy holds special meaning for Dr. Lindsay and her team as it affirms a mission rooted in compassion and understanding, particularly for a population that often faces significant barriers to care.
Memories
Dr. Lindsay recalls one dental treatment visit that left her with a lasting impression. In the course of providing routine care, she and the patient shared stories and memories together, and for a moment, it felt as though the patient had become herself again. The conversation flowed naturally, and was filled with warmth and familiarity.
However, when the patient’s daughter entered the room and was not recognized, that bright moment dulled. For Dr. Lindsay, witnessing this family’s heartbreak firsthand underscored the profound reality of Alzheimer’s disease for her, along with the quiet strength required of families navigating it.
Experiences like these reinforce why the work of Dental Home Services matters so deeply. In bringing dental care directly into a patient’s home, the team is not only preserving oral health, but is offering comfort, dignity, and connection during some of life’s most challenging chapters.
